Kia Ora,

The Wellington Timebank is currently sponsoring an open t-shirt design competition.

This competition is now open for submissions from designers of any level from around the entire Wellington community. This is an opportunity for artists to creatively express their ideas about what they want their communities to look like, and have a chance to have their work printed on t-shirts.

The theme of our competition is –Our Place: My Dream– Where do you see our community going? How will it get there?

Envision a place where you would belong.

Winning designs will be chosen by public vote and printed on t-shirts, with winning designers getting a free shirt.

The t-shirts will be sold as a fundraiser for the Wellington Timebank.

Submissions are due September 10th and must include the timebank logo (see 2nd image).

To submit: send a high quality digital copy to Hannah at wgtn.timebank@gmail.com or drop off a hard copy at the Wellington Timebank office in the Newtown Community Centre.

Please send this on to anyone you think might be interested in participating in the Competition.

Please feel free to contact Marit at maolson24@gmail.com or 027 484 6844, or Hannah at the Timebank at 04 920 6708 or wgtn.timebank@gmail.com with questions or for more information.

THISTLE HALL EARTHQUAKE STRENGTHENING.

SNAPSHOT

Good news - Wellington City Council is going to undertake the necessary earthquake strengthening of Thistle Hall!

We are very pleased that this has been brought forward in their annual plan and is scheduled to happen in the second half of this year.

Although a firm schedule is not available at this stage it will require the temporary closure of the venue while the work is carried out. The guidelines we have currently suggest a shut down period of 3-6 months, with a best case scenario of starting in July or as soon after that as all the necessary plans, consents and contracts are in place. This is just a tentative time frame at this stage so the actual start date could be later than this – unfortunately it is just too far out to know yet.

While we understand that this will inevitably be disruptive to both artists and audiences, we hope you will agree that it is a positive move and shows the council support of the venue and its vital role in serving the local community.

This means we are not currently taking gallery submissions beyond the end of June 2013, while we await a firmer schedule and details from the council. As more information becomes available we will update via our mailing list, Facebook profile and here on our website.

If you would like to subscribe to our mailing list for the weekly gallery listings or other occasional updates, please do so here.

BLACK GRACE PRESENTS: WAKA | BY NEIL IEREMIA.

SNAPSHOT

"Powerfully elegant and possessed of technical finesse of almost archaic rawness" – Nahe-Zeitung, Germany, 2012.

Met with a standing ovation and rapturous applause upon its performance in Europe, Waka's initial 35 minute showing has now evolved in a stunning 60 minute masterpiece since its return to New Zealand and further demonstrates the incredible choreographic work of Neil Ieremia.

Exploring the idea of a raft as a metaphor for hope, Waka is inspired in part by The Raft, video installation by Bill Viola, as well as a response to The Arrival of the Maoris in New Zealand by Louis J. Steele and Charles F. Goldie 1898, influenced by Theodore Gericault's famous The Raft of the Medusa depicting the terror of a shipwreck.

"Intensive dance imagery – a powerful demonstration of strength and battle readiness" – Mainpost, Schweinfurt, Germany 2012.

Now, Aotearoa – the birth place of Black Grace – will be able to experience the full length version of this international sensation, as Ieremia unleashes a torrent of physicality and beauty with dancers Sarah Baron, Thomas Fonua, Sean MacDonald, Daniel McCarroll, Amy Moxham, Carl Tolentino and Zoe Watkins.

Don't miss what is set to be an incredible night of spectacular New Zealand dance.

Fibre artist wins inaugural Wellington Regional Arts Review.

SNAPSHOT

Upper Hutt fibre artist, Katherine Morrison has won the inaugural Wellington Regional Arts Review. Her winning work, Bedding, was one of more than 150 entries received from Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Kapiti and Wairarapa.

Review organiser, Natalie Friend, says the judges, Aaron Lister and Julie Catchpole, were drawn to the winning work which is made from humble materials – blanket, cotton and sheeting, from the beginning. Thousands of hand stitches have been used to create a subtle, abstract two dimensional map-like surface.

Submissions to the Review, which included paintings, photography, drawings and sculpture, were received from a mix of established artists, up and coming artists, students and first timers. "The judges were interested that a lot of works demonstrated using traditional techniques in a contemporary way. Overall the standard was very high and the best works were well resolved and well made. They chose works which showed originality and had taken a different approach," Ms Friend says.

Mr Lister, curator of New Zealand art at Wellington's City gallery and Ms Catchpole, director of Nelson's Suter Gallery, have selected a cross section of 61 works to be displayed at Expressions, Upper Hutt from 18 May to 1 July.

"The works submitted are reflective of the region and the types of artists practicing here. There is a lot of work depicting the landscape, which is not surprising, as landscape predominates in New Zealand art. The judges have selected a very representative range of the submissions for the final exhibition," Ms Friend says.

For families.
Capital E
2.00 - 4.00pm Sunday 25 March
Alphabet Street is a Sunday session at Capital E, where families can listen, laugh, dance and craft together. We provide an iconic live Wellington band, a craft workshop, a dance workshop and a photobooth family photo, as part of our afternoon activities. Alphabet Street proves kids and parents can listen to and enjoy the same music. Alphabet aims to inspire the next generation of Wellington musicians, dancers and artists by providing an authentic arts experience. Alphabet Street is funk for the whole family.

Alphabet Street with Lord Echo will run from 2.00 - 4.00pm on Sunday 25 March, with local DJ Edmund Skillary providing the first hour of tunes to dance to, while you craft with Craftcamp and learn some new dance moves with the Pump Dancers. Each family can also take away a free Amazing Travelling Photobooth family photo to remember your awesome family day with.

Lord Echo aka Mike Fabulous, is the guitarist and producer for such bands as The Black Seeds, Fabulous Arabia, The Scribes of Ra and The Recloose Band. Lord Echo's debut solo release Melodies, is a roaring romp through his crazy world of sound; a magical, meandering journey through Afro–disco, Soul Reggae, Latin boogie and Ethio–Jazz. Echo is joined by a plethora of notable colleagues from every Wellington band you can imagine, but this time it's all about Echo! His remarkable talents are everywhere in abundance. The studio boffin has put down his soldering iron and picked up his tambourine in order to create a mighty album of towering tunes! Lord Echo plays his second ever Wellington show, especially for Alphabet Street families. Lucky.

THISTLE HALL PRESENTS... SMART ARTS SEMINARS.

SAS

Over three Tuesday evenings this October, Thistle Hall is holding a series of free seminars for artists wanting to develop themselves. These will be held at The Hub at Toi Poneke Arts Centre on Abel Smith Street from 6.00 to 8.00pm on 4, 11 and 18 October. Each session will be approx 1 hour long followed by a Q&A over tea and biscuits.

Our first seminar will be on Tuesday 4 Oct at 6pm with Mark Amery. The 11 October seminar will be with Nikki Burns from Grow Wellington about the artist as a business and our third seminar, on 18 October, will be about career development within the arts.

You can put your name down to come along by emailing Hannah Clarke at thistlehallworkshops@gmail.com. Spaces are limited to so please get in touch soon. You can elect to come to one session or all three!

PLANT: PUBLICITY & MEDIA 4 OCTOBER
Wondering best how to get that necessary review, article or interview? Mark Amery has worked in both the arts and the media and knows the tricks of both trades. This session will be tailored to the specific questions you bring about the arts and the media. What are your best approaches? What's the reality of the media in relation to the arts in NZ and your best chances? How do you construct a news release that will actually be read and used? Are you better off these days just being the media and building your own networks? With both fresh and long, good and tortuous experiences on both sides of the fence Mark is looking forward to a frank, open and practical session about getting your work out there.

For further information or to register email thistlehallworkshops@gmail.com.
