Thistle Hall was built for W Campbell in 1907 and designed by Penty and Blake, who also designed the Hunter Building in 1903 at Victoria University (which was threatened with demolition due to being an earthquake risk). The building was originally used as two shops downstairs (one a grocery) and most likely residential accommodation above.

The Protestant Hall Company bought the property in 1924 and made alterations to it. It is quite possible that the upper floor was converted into a community hall about this time.

In 1930 it became Empire Hall and it is unknown when it became Thistle Hall.

Thistle Hall is looked after by a community trust and it was due to them, and the fact that the Morans refused to sell their building across the road, that saved the hall from demolition to make way for the 'by pass'. It has now been earthquake secured, repainted and refurbished, and is a busy community venue.
